Murder suicide inquest - coroner highly critical

05/11/2008

In December 2007 Roger Goswell stabbed his wife to death at their home before killing himself in a car crash. At the time he was in a disturbed mental state and had only recently been released from the Priory. Family members and other clinicians had raised specific concerns about Mr Goswells mental state. His daughter had earlier written a prophetic email to consultants seeking their assistance in treating her father and expressing her concern that if he was not properly treated the case would end up on the front pages. The coroner was critical of Sussex Police, the NHS and the Priory. She noted that doctors had been guilty of “appalling discourtesy” in failing to respond to concerns expressed both by the family and another treating clinician. She expressed concern that The Priory had no policy to deal with patients who had threatened to harm others. She recorded a verdict of unlawful killing for Mrs Goswells death and a narrative verdict for Mr Goswell.  Michael Mylonas represented the family on a pro bono basis.
