Andrew Hockton successfully defends Muslim dentist in GDC

03/07/2009

Andrew Hockton successfully defended Omer Butt in a disciplinary hearing that took place on various dates betweeen 7th May and 3rd July 2009 before the Professional Conduct Committee of the GDC. At the conclusion of the case, the Committee held that Mr Butt's fitness to practise was not impaired. The allegation in the case, which was widely publicised in the local and national press, was that Mr Butt's fitness to practise was impaired by reason of his purported imposition of an Islamic dress code on female patients. The evidence called on behalf of Mr Butt included evidence on aspects of Islamic law from Sheikh Mady, the well-known imam from Belfast.

Andrew was instructed by Charles Atkins of Gordons Solicitors.
