The policing of public order regularly gives rise to difficult legal problems, often requiring immediate solutions. Apparently conflicting human rights principles and ever-changing legislation make it difficult to be confident that a decision taken during a rapidly unfolding situation will be lawful. John, George and Susanna have recently completed Public Order: Law and Practice, a book which aims to provide clear analysis and guidance on this most challenging area of modern policing.
Published as part of Oxford University Press Practical Policing Series, and edited by Michael Messinger, former Commander of Metropolitan Police Service, the book provides a straightforward, practical guide to the general legal principles applicable to public order, breach of the peace and human rights. It also addresses the technical aspects of specific public order scenarios, such as hate crime, football violence and direct action. Throughout the book, case studies provide examples to assist the reader in understanding the impact of the law in specific scenarios.
