John Beggs QC successfully defends Chief Constable of Surrey in false imprisonment and malicious persecution claim

30/11/2011

On 9th November 2011 the Claimant in a malicious prosecution and false imprisonment claim brought against the Chief Constable of Surrey Police discontinued his claim before Eady J and a jury after a day of cross-examination by John Beggs QC, who acted for the Chief Constable.

The claim arose out of the Claimant’s arrest 10 years earlier for conspiracy to murder following an attempted murder in Caterham on 5th May 2000.  The Claimant had sought damages, including exemplary damages, for an alleged “fit up” by the officers in the case in relation to forensic evidence.  The Claimant’s capitulation entirely cleared the police officers concerned.
