John Beggs QC and James Berry represented the Chief Constable of Northumbria Police in Raoul Moat Inquest. The Jury returned a suicide verdict on 27 September 2011 after a 15 day inquest. The Jury also delivered a narrative that completely exonerated Northumbria Police. Raoul Moat killed his ex-girlfriend’s new partner, shot his ex-girlfriend and blinded a Police Officer before “declaring war” on Northumbria Police in July 2010. At the conclusion of one of the largest police manhunts in living memory, involving over 12 police forces, Moat shot himself following 6 hours’ dialogue with police negotiators. The inquest examined negotiator tactics and the use of firearms and taser.
