Police had no strategy for dealing with a violent patient who died after being restrained, an inquest has decided. Mr Massey had been treated for acute pancreatitis at Kings Mill Hospital, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He died in the early hours of 8 August 2006 after being CS sprayed and restrained by police officers from the Nottinghamshire Constabulary who had been called to the hospital by hospital staff.
The inquest investigated the circumstances of Mr Massey's death including the use of CS spray in a hospital; the role of the police officers and hospital staff involved and the use of restraint.
The Coroner recorded a verdict that Mr Massey died of a cardiac arrest following restraint in combination with acute pancreatitis and the use of an opiate painkiller, tramadol. Mr Massey suffered a fatal cardiac arrest whilst doctors tried to inject him with a sedative.
