Chris Johnston represents two sisters awarded about £3.3m damages for the failure properly to care for their sickle cell disease.

22/03/2011

Chris Johnston has represented a family struck by a double tragedy.  Two sisters, Olayinka and Wuraola Obafemi, suffered a series of strokes as a result of their sickle cell disease while in the care of the Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust.  The strokes caused permanent physical and cognitive disabilities.  With a partial admission of liability in the case of Olayinka (22), a periodic payment settlement the equivalent of about £1.9m was achieved.  Although liability was denied in the case of Wuraola (17), a periodic payment settlement of about £1.4m was established.  The case is summarised on the BBC News website at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-12806764
