Clinical negligence: Prior to being called to the Bar, Richard worked as a surgeon. His considerable practical experience of hospital medicine and, in particular, general surgical techniques, is valued highly by his clients. Richard has a particular specialism in high value brain injury cases. He has appeared in many clinical negligence trials, both medical and dental, in the High Court and county courts. His clinical negligence cases have included fatal accident claims, incidents of misdiagnosis, and issues of consent to treatment. Richard has significant experience of very high value claims.
Dental negligence: Richard has developed a niche practice in dental negligence cases. He also acts for dentists in the GDC.
Inquests: Richard has appeared at many coroners’ inquests representing families, doctors and hospitals. Cases in which he has been involved have included cases involving patients who died while under section, suicide, and negligence. Many of these inquests have been in front of juries.
Disciplinary work: Richard has significant experience of medical and dental related disciplinary cases and has appeared in many FHSA appeals for patients, doctors, dentists, and opticians. He has appeared frequently before the GMC and GDC. Doctors represented by Richard include Professor Sir Roy Meadow, Dr. Dhasmana (Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry), and Dr. Brennan (Devon & Exeter NHS Trust Breast Screening Inquiry). He has acted in a number of appeals from the GMC to the High Court
Inquiries: Richard has acted in a number of significant medically related inquiries including the Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry, and the Devon & Exeter NHS Trust breast screening inquiry.
Ethical cases: Richard has acted in a significant number of cases involving ethical issues such as consent to treatment, capacity, and compulsory detention.
Registered homes: Richard has experience of cases before the registered homes tribunal.
Mental health: Richard has experience of working in a private psychiatric hospital. He has a thorough understanding of the Mental Health Act and its applications. He has appeared in cases involving consent to treatment, capacity, and compulsory detention.
