Nature of Practice

Coroners’ Courts  Jon has extensive experience of coroners’ inquests, acting for families, Trusts and Medical Defence Organisations, including in cases in which unlawful killing (in the medical context) has been a potential verdict.
Among the very many inquests in which Jon has been instructed involving medical issues was a lengthy inquest involving a death in custody at a police station. He acted for the police surgeon who together with the officers on duty faced allegations that there had been an unacceptable delay in establishing that a man detained for being drunk and disorderly was in fact suffering from a fractured skull.

Pensions Advice  Jon advises police forces regularly in this area.

Disciplinary hearings  Jon has been involved in disciplinary hearings in many different contexts. He has appeared before the General Medical Council and on behalf of the Dental Practice Board he has conducted disciplinary hearings against dentists involving allegations both of inadequate professional treatment and dishonesty. He has been involved in disciplinary work in the financial services area and represented an insurance broker before his regulatory association.

Employment Tribunals  Jon has extensive experience of Employment Tribunal work involving claims of both unfair dismissal and race and sex discrimination. By example whilst acting for the employer he has recently been successful in establishing that a medical condition of which the applicant complained did not constitute a disability within the meaning of the Disability Discrimination Act.
