Nature of Practice

 

Medical discipline Gerry has a keen interest in all aspects of medical disciplinary work. At the General Medical Council he has appeared before the Interim Orders Panel, the FTP, the Committee on Professional Performance and the Assessment Referral Committee.
He has widened the scope of his disciplinary practice and has also appeared before the General Council of Chiropractors, the Society of Analytical Psychologists and the Health Professionals` Committee. Gerry also represents nurses before the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

 

Police Discipline  Gerry is currently retained by a number of Forces to appear on behalf of the Presenting Officer to prosecute disciplinary charges covering a broad spectrum of misconduct, neglect and honesty and integrity including sexual harassment, death in custody, excessive use of force, fatal firearm operations, wrongful disclosure of sensitive information and corruption. He has considerable experience in advising on evidence and disclosure and the drafting of disciplinary charges. When not presenting cases, Gerry has acted as a Legal Advisor to disciplinary tribunals.

Reported and other cases of Interest

 

Metropolitan Police v PCs Bridgeman & ors- Gerry acted for the Metropolitan Police in this case against several officers accused of misconduct in the case of a black man who was allegedly assaulted during an arrest in 1995.

Operation Bedouin - Gerry represented Bedfordshire Police in this high profile case in which four officers were accused of trading “favours” for confessions. In return for confessing to crimes prisoners were allowed to have sex with their girlfriends, visit their homes and were given things like cigarettes and extra meals. Some prisoners confessed to crimes that had taken place while they were imprisoned. As a result of the officers’ actions the crime detection rate in Luton soared. Three officers were required to resign and one resigned voluntarily.

He has written and presented a number of seminars to the police service and its lawyers, particularly on the Human Rights Act the implications of the introduction of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, and the Freedom of Information.
