Edward is developing a broad civil and public law practice and he is regularly instructed in a wide range of courts and tribunals.
International Law / Human Rights Edward has a particular interest in International Law and Human Rights.
Edward was previously employed as a legal consultant in the field of International Law and was seconded to provide legal assistance to the government of an African nation. He was tasked to provide daily legal advice on a range of international legal issues and acted as a governmental focal point on legal issues surrounding Female Genital Mutilation and the Maputo Protocol on the Rights of Women.
In 2004, Edward was employed as a consultant within an international non-governmental organisation to work in Sierra Leone. He was closely involved in monitoring the International Criminal Court of Sierra Leone and in the coordination of a Conflict Mapping Project which recorded the atrocities committed in Sierra Leone during the civil war.
In 2001, Edward was employed at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and worked as an associate member of the Advance Team of the ICC. Since that time he has maintained a keen interest in International Law and the development of the International Criminal Court. This has included representing the government of an African nation at the Assembly of States Parties for the International Criminal Court.
Edward is closely involved in the establishment and coordination of a Justice Rapid Response mechanism, an international cooperative mechanism for the supply and secondment of legal expertise and assistance to developing States.
Edward has been instructed to provide pro bono advice on the prospects of success in Capital Punishment Cases within the Jamaican Jurisdiction.
Police Law Edward advises and represents many of the police forces in a wide variety of civil actions. He has represented and/or is instructed by the police in both jury and judge-only trials and has acted in many interim matters. Edward has undertaken a wide range of general advisory work, including general operational advice to several forces on matters such as the implementation of new legislation and the disclosure obligations in civil litigation.
Inquiries and inquests Edward specialises in inquest law. He has acted for families, NHS Trusts and other statutory bodies at inquests around the country. Edward has a particular interest in inquests held under Art 2 ECHR investigating deaths in police or prison custody and deaths of detained patients in psychiatric hospitals.
Medical ethics and treatment decisions
Edward has a developing practice in cases involving issues of capacity and best interests. In 2010 he wrote a chapter 10 (Feeding) on the legal issues surrounding the use of involuntary feeding which was published in “Medical Treatment: Decisions and the Law” written by a team of authors at 3 Serjeants’ Inn, edited by Christopher Johnson (Bloomsbury Professional 2010). Military Law In 2007/08, Edward worked within the Army Legal Service. This experience allowed him to gain a detailed understanding of military law and structure. In addition, Edward was involved in advising on Military Law, discipline and prosecuting in Courts Martial Cases on behalf of the Director of Army Legal Services.
Injunctions
Edward has considerable experience in advising and applying for injunctions under the Protection from Harrassment Act 1997. Edward recently and successfully acted for Health Care Professionals and NHS Trusts in applications for interim and final injunctions. He has also advised and represented international commercial corporations in relation to the obtaining of injunctions.
Disclosure applications Edward frequently acts in disclosure applications in the Family Courts and Crown Courts. He represents police forces in cases in which it is necessary to assert confidentiality in relation to medical records, or documents created in the course of police investigation, or manage disclosure, such as those involving child abuse by a family member.
Pro Bono Work Edward accepts pro bono mental health, social welfare, inquest and medical cases (including providing representation for families at inquests) via the Bar Pro-Bono Unit and mental health charities.
