Nature of Practice

 

Inquiries and inquests

 

Edward specialises in inquest law.  He has acted for families, NHS Trusts and other statutory bodies at inquests around the country.  Edward has particular interest in inquests held under Art 2 ECHR investigating deaths in police or prison custody and deaths of detained patients in psychiatric hospitals.

 

Medical ethics and treatment decisions

 

Edward has a developing practice in cases involving issues of capacity and best interests.  In 2010, he wrote Chapter 10 (Feeding) on the legal issues surrounding the use of involuntary feeding which was published in "Medical Treatment: Decisions and the Law" written by a team of authors at 3 Serjeants' Inn, edited by Christopher Johnson (Bloomsbury Professional 2010).  He is also the assistant editor of the Medical Treatment: Decisions and the Law companion website see the link at the left or directly at

Professional discipline

 

Edward has considerable experience and a wide ranging interest in professional discipline and regulation.  He has experience of advising and representing professionals before their regulatory bodies and also of appeals of disciplinary and regulatory decisions.  Edward has been involved in a number of professional discipline hearings before the General Medical Council, General Optical Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.  Edward has provided advice on the conduct of GMC trials and on prospects of success.  He also advises on issues arising out of proceedings, including in relation to likely sanctions and appeals.

 

Disclosure applications

 

Edward frequently acts in disclosure applications in the Family Courts and Crown Courts.  He represents hospitals and General Practitioners in cases in which it is necessary to assert confidentiality in relation to medical records or manage disclosure.

 

Injunctions

 

Edward has condiserable experience in advising and applying for injunctions under the Protection from Harrassment Act 1997.  Edward recently and successfully acted for Health Care Professionals and NHS Trusts in applications for interim and final injunctions.  He has also advised and represented international commercial corporations in relation to the obtaining of injunctions.

 

Pro Bono Work

 

Edward accepts pro bono mental health, social welfare, inquest and medical cases (including providing representation for families at inquests) via the Bar Pro Bono Unit and mental health charities.
